Kampala, Uganda: The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has registered more than 9 million Ugandans within just two months as part of the ongoing national ID renewal and registration exercise.
NIRA Registrar Claire Ollama disclosed at Naguru Police Headquarters on Monday that the figure includes over 8 million renewals and nearly 800,000 first-time applicants who have obtained their National Identification Numbers and are in the process of receiving their advanced national identification cards.
“This impressive progress demonstrates the commitment of Ugandans to acquire secure, credible identification documents,” Ollama said. “We continue to urge all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take advantage of this exercise before the August deadline.”
Ollama also revealed that NIRA has completed printing the first phase of 100,000 advanced national IDs, which feature enhanced security measures to combat fraud and ensure reliable identity verification.
Speaking at the same presser, NIRA Executive Director, Ms Rosemary Kisembo, highlighted the urgency of the mass registration, noting that Uganda’s current registered population stands at 27.4 million, while the national population is approximately 45.9 million according to the latest census.
“Closing the registration gap is vital for national security, service delivery, and effective governance,” Kisembo said. “We call on all Ugandans to register promptly to avoid being excluded from essential government programs and services.”
The exercise is critical as over 15.8 million national IDs will expire by the end of August 2025, making the timely renewal imperative.
