Kiryandongo, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has confirmed Mr Osaga Nelson as its flag bearer for the Kiryandongo District LC5 chairperson seat after a court ruling and the withdrawal of a petition challenging his party primary election victory.

The petition, filed by fellow aspirant Hon. Kiirya Toffa, alleged that Osaga engaged in voter ferrying from West Nile, voter intimidation, and bribery during the party primaries. Kiirya also accused Osaga’s agents of misconduct intended to sway the results.

According to official results, Osaga won with more than 19,000 votes, followed by incumbent chairperson Aliguma Edith Adyeri in second place, while Kiirya came third with over 8,000 votes.

The NRM Electoral Commission Tribunal confirmed that Kiirya formally withdrew the petition at 10:20 am on Thursday in Kampala, effectively clearing Osaga to carry the party’s flag in the 2026 general elections.

In a statement shared with his supporters via social media platforms, Osaga welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to those who stood by him. Jubilations broke out among his supporters in Kiryandongo shortly after the news spread.

Speaking on Kibanda FM last week, Osaga, currently the LC3 chairperson for Kyankende Subcounty, said he is committed to tackling three key challenges in the district: land grabbing and illegal evictions, unemployment, and slow economic development.

“I will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure Kiryandongo achieves balanced development,” he said. “This is just the beginning. The real contest is in 2026, and I encourage residents to show the same support in the general election as they did in the primaries.”

Meanwhile, in the recently concluded LC3 election for Kyankende Subcounty, Okwaroi John Etyang emerged as the NRM flag bearer after securing 2,832 votes, defeating Kiiza Francis Aweko (686 votes) and Anyolitho Lawrence (369 votes).
