VP Alupo represents Museveni at Tokyo International Conference on African Dev’t

Yokohama, Japan: Uganda’s Vice President, Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, on Wednesday represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the official opening ceremony of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), held at the Pacifico Yokohama Convention Centre.

The high-level summit, which commenced on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, brings together African leaders and Japan’s top policymakers under the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” The discussions focus on leveraging Japan’s advanced technologies and expertise to address Africa’s development challenges.

Speaking shortly after the opening ceremony, Vice President Alupo said Uganda stood to benefit significantly from the conference. “This theme reflects Uganda’s priorities for technological advancement and innovation in tackling development challenges. Uganda will work closely with Japan and other partners to maximize these opportunities,” Alupo noted.

Uganda Engages Japanese Investors

On the sidelines of TICAD-9, Alupo held bilateral meetings with Japanese companies, the Japanese Business Federation (Keidanren), and the leadership of the Japan Foundation.

She highlighted Uganda’s strategic interventions to attract investment, particularly in technology, industrialization, and infrastructure development.

Her engagements focused on forging partnerships that will accelerate Uganda’s drive for technological transfer, human capital development, and digital transformation, in line with Vision 2040.

Uganda’s participation at TICAD-9 underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Japan, a strategic development partner for Africa.
