The late officer first developed severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea moments after eating pork at Mugasya Trading Centre
Busia, Uganda: A police officer investigating a suspected human sacrifice case in Masinya, Busia District, has died under mysterious circumstances after reportedly eating pork at a local joint.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) John Opit, who was leading inquiries into the beheading of John Bosco Lobyoko, developed severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea moments after eating pork at Mugasya Trading Centre. Witnesses said he complained of a burning sensation from his mouth to the stomach before collapsing.
He was rushed to Dabani Hospital but died shortly after admission. At the time of his death, Opit was spearheading investigations into Lobyoko’s brutal killing. The former herdsman turned security guard was found beheaded and dumped in a swamp in Masinya last month. His head is still missing, with investigators suspecting ritualistic sacrifice.

Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Moses Mugwe, confirmed Opit’s death but declined to speculate on the cause. “It’s true one of our officers based in Masinya has died under very mysterious circumstances. We are waiting for toxicology results from the government analytical laboratory,” he said.
Police sources revealed that Opit’s condition deteriorated rapidly after his first bites of the pork. His body was taken to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem, but inconclusive findings prompted samples from his liver, kidneys, intestines, and stomach contents to be sent to the Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory (DGAL) for further tests.
Masinya Sub-county LC3 Chairperson, Mr Godfrey Nasichongi, said the community had lost a dedicated officer committed to peace and justice.
Police confirmed two suspects linked to Lobyoko’s death remain in custody, but further investigation is ongoing to establish the full truth behind both the suspected ritual murder and Opit’s sudden death.
