Ssemugabi strike keeps Cranes’ World Cup dream alive, Algeria books 2026 slot

Uganda Cranes forward Jude Ssemugabi celebrates after scoring the lone goal against Botswana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Francistown on Thursday night.

Francistown, Botswana: Jude Ssemugabi’s second-half header rekindled Uganda Cranes’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes as they secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Botswana in Francistown on Thursday evening.

Returning to the starting lineup, legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango replaced Salim Magoola, while Tobby Sibbick and Aziz Kayondo anchored the flanks in a balanced setup by the Cranes.

Despite dominating the first half with a flurry of chances, Uganda couldn’t find a breakthrough until the 54th minute when Allan Okello’s corner found an unmarked Jude Ssemugabi, who rose highest to nod the ball home, in what turned out to be the winner of the night.

FUFA President Hon. Moses Magogo was in attendance alongside Botswana Football Association President Tariq Babitseng, emphasizing the strong regional football ties.

The win pushed Uganda to 18 points in Group G, four behind leaders Algeria, who sealed automatic qualification with a commanding 3–0 victory over Somalia on the same night. With that result, Algeria’s place at the 2026 World Cup is confirmed regardless of the outcome of their final fixture against Uganda in Algiers next week.

In other fixtures, Guinea edged Mozambique 2–1 in Maputo to climb to 14 points, while Botswana remained on 9 and Somalia bottom with 1.

With one game to go, Uganda now sits second ahead of Mozambique (15) and Guinea (14), but must beat Algeria on Tuesday, October 14, at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium to stand a chance of qualifying as one of the four best second-placed teams.

The match will serve as a litmus test for Coach Paul Put’s side as they chase history for a FIFA World Cup appearance, a tournament Uganda has never qualified for.
