Mbale, Uganda: The Bamasaaba cultural institution has pledged to actively defend the rights of its people, particularly widows and children, ensuring access to education, property ownership, and protection against discrimination.
The assurance was made by the institution’s spokesperson, Steven Masiga, at a workshop on peaceful elections for 2026 organized by the National NGO Forum in Mt. Elgon.
Mr Masiga emphasized that the cultural institution will not stand idle while the rights of its subjects are eroded or abused. “There are many rights which we shall continuously highlight to our people, such as the right against discrimination, the right to education for children, the right of widows to own land, and the right to celebrate culture as outlined in Article 37 of the Constitution, among others.”
“All rights, including political rights, must be respected,” Masiga said.

The Bamasaba spokesperson cited an incident where a parent beat his 20-year-old son for aspiring to contest as a councillor, stressing that political rights should be protected and respected.
Other speakers at the workshop included Moses Mulindwa of the Uganda National NGO Forum, who spoke on the importance of peaceful elections, and Iddi Mafabi, who urged participants to prioritize voter education. The workshop drew participants from across Eastern Uganda.
