Buyende, Uganda: Police in Buyende District are investigating a mob killing that occurred on Thursday morning after a suspect accused of stealing a goat was violently beaten and later died at Buyende Health Centre III.
The incident happened at around 11:00 am along Long Kamuli Road in Buyende Town Council when 28-year-old Umali Gabiri, a resident of Dema Cell, was found near Buyende Cattle Market with a white-and-black she-goat suspected to be stolen.
According to police, members of the public confronted Gabiri, who allegedly led them to the spot where the animal had been tied. Before police could be notified or any lawful procedure undertaken to verify ownership of the goat, the crowd descended on the suspect and beat him unconscious.

Police responded promptly upon being alerted and rushed Gabiri to Buyende Health Centre III, where he was pronounced dead.
The scene was examined by investigators who collected evidence to support inquiries into both the alleged theft and the murder. Police say the deceased sustained severe injuries to his face and multiple wounds on his back consistent with mob assault.
Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega condemned the act, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands. He reminded the public that mob justice is illegal and undermines criminal investigations and the justice system.
“As the festive season approaches, we are also warning the public about an increase in livestock theft and related crimes,” Lubega said. He advised communities to strengthen security for their animals, especially at night, and ensure timely reporting for quick police response.
Police in Buyende say patrols, community policing and public sensitisation efforts will be intensified to curb livestock theft and improve safety in the area.
