London, United Kingdom: Chelsea Football Club have officially parted company with head coach Enzo Maresca after 18 months in charge, bringing an end to a spell that delivered silverware but fell short of long-term stability at Stamford Bridge.
In a club statement issued on January 1, 2026, Chelsea said the decision was reached by mutual agreement, with both parties believing a change was necessary to give the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
During his time at the club, Maresca guided Chelsea to silverware, winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, achievements the club described as an important part of its recent history.
“Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club,” Chelsea said.
However, despite the silverware, Chelsea’s league form remained inconsistent, with performances in the Premier League fluctuating and Champions League qualification still in doubt.

Chelsea reaffirmed that with four competitions still in play, including a push for a top-four finish, both parties felt a reset was required to re-energise the squad.
Maresca, a former assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, was appointed amid high expectations, tasked with instilling a structured, possession-based philosophy while overseeing a young and evolving squad assembled through heavy investment.
While his tactical identity was evident in spells, critics pointed to defensive fragility and a lack of consistency against top domestic rivals as key shortcomings.
Football analysts in England have noted that Chelsea’s decision aligns with a broader trend at the club in recent seasons, where managerial changes have been used as a lever to quickly correct course rather than commit to long-term rebuilds.
In its statement, Chelsea thanked Maresca for his professionalism and contribution, wishing him well in his future career. No immediate replacement was named, though reports in the British media suggest the club has already drawn up a shortlist of potential successors, with an interim solution also under consideration.
