Lira City, Uganda: Police at Lira City West Division are holding the LCI Chairperson of Junior Quarters A Cell and two other suspects over the alleged theft of a bale containing 50 government-issued mosquito nets.
The suspects have been identified as James Okori (49), a carpenter and LCI Chairperson of Junior Quarters A Cell, Jane Awor (38), and Tino Annette (29), all residents of Junior Quarters in Lira City. They were arrested on January 31, 2026.
According to police, the trio allegedly unlawfully took possession of a bale containing 50 mosquito nets, property of the Government of Uganda, under circumstances that remain unclear.
The mosquito nets, supplied by the Ministry of Health Uganda, had been temporarily stored at Lira Police Primary School ahead of planned distribution to residents of Junior Quarters Cell under a community health programme.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema said police acted after receiving a complaint and conducted searches at the suspects’ residences, where the stolen mosquito nets were recovered.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the recovered mosquito nets are property of the Government of Uganda and were meant for free distribution to the community,” Okema said.
He added that investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the theft and to identify any other individuals who may have been involved.
Okema appealed to local leaders to respect and safeguard government programmes, warning against actions that undermine public service delivery.
