Mbarara City, Uganda: The Uganda Prisons Service has hailed an exceptional academic milestone after Mbarara Main Prison and Mbarara Women’s Prison emerged top among all inmate learning centres following the release of the 2025 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results.
In an X statement issued on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Prisons Service said the learning environment at the two facilities had been transformed by joy and celebration after the Mbarara Prison Centre registered the highest overall average performance across all Uganda Prisons inmate schools.
According to the statement, seven inmate candidates attained Division One, the best result recorded within the prison education system nationwide.

Two inmates, Ivan Mucunguzi and Ivan Bakashaba, emerged as the top performers, each scoring an aggregate of 10, placing them among the strongest PLE candidates within custodial learning programmes.
A total of 40 inmates were registered for the 2025 PLE at the Mbarara Prison Centre. Of these, seven obtained Division One, 15 Division Two, 10 Division Three, five Division Four, two Division U, while one candidate was absent.
The Prisons Service credited the performance to discipline, commitment by inmate learners, and the support of prison instructors and education partners, noting that the results reaffirm the role of education in rehabilitation and reintegration.
The results were released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) last week.
