Bugweri, Uganda: Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Ibrahim Ndhoga has instructed his legal team to file an election petition challenging the victory of Hamidu Kimark, who was declared winner of the Bugweri District LCV race on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Speaking on Monday, February 2, 2026, while appearing on the Ensi Nebyayo radio programme on NBS FM in Jinja, hosted by Sir Grace Mwesigwa, Ndhoga said he believes the will of the people of Bugweri was undermined during the election process and that the courts provide a lawful avenue to address such concerns.
Ndhoga said the petition will cite alleged electoral irregularities, including claims of ballot stuffing, use of forged declaration of results forms and isolated incidents of violence, which he argues compromised the integrity of the poll and suppressed voters’ voices in parts of the district.
“I respect our institutions and believe the truth can only be established through the courts. This is about protecting the voice of the voters of Bugweri,” Ndhoga said, adding that some individuals had attempted to discourage him from seeking legal redress.
Bugweri District Returning Officer Oguttu Michael on January 23, 2026 declared Kimark the winner after polling 18,188 votes. Ndhoga came second with 7,968 votes, while incumbent Muziransa Faraji Shafi (Independent) garnered 2,988 votes. Lukaba Swaliki of the NRM polled 7,019 votes.
Ndhoga said his decision to challenge the results reflects his commitment to democracy, peace and the rule of law, insisting that courts remain the only legitimate forum for resolving electoral disputes.
Political observers and supporters of the former FDC candidate have welcomed the move, describing it as a sign of democratic maturity and urging supporters on all sides to remain calm as the judicial process unfolds.
