Pedestrian killed in Zombo truck accident

A pedestrian died on the spot on Monday morning after he was knocked down by a truck in Abanga Sub-County, Zombo District, raising fresh concerns over speeding on newly rehabilitated roads.

Zombo, Uganda: A pedestrian died on the spot in a road accident after being knocked down by a truck in the early hours of Monday at Malara Village, Pakadha Parish, Abanga Sub-County, Zombo District, amid renewed concerns over rising road crashes following recent road upgrades.

The deceased has been identified only as Okethi, a resident of Odarlembe Village in Pamitu Parish, Abanga Sub-County.

Eyewitnesses who spoke on condition of anonymity said Okethi was walking home from a night disco when the truck hit him. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.

Abanga Sub-County LCIII Chairperson Richard Awekunimungu confirmed the incident and cautioned motorists and other road users against speeding.

“Road rehabilitation has improved motorability, but some drivers are abusing it by overspeeding, which is causing unnecessary loss of life,” Awekunimungu said.

The body was taken to Nyapea Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Police said the truck driver, whose identity had not yet been released, is being held at Serr Police Post, where the vehicle has been impounded pending transfer to the Central Police Station for further investigations.

The incident adds to a growing list of road fatalities in Zombo District, where newly rehabilitated roads have been linked to reckless riding and speeding.

Recently, the Zombo Resident District Commissioner Festus Ayikobua urged motorists and riders to exercise restraint and responsibility on the improved road network to curb preventable crashes.
