Mbale, Uganda: The Bugisu sub-region has expressed readiness to host the 2026 International Tourism Day celebrations, with cultural leaders and government officials optimistic the event will unlock tourism and economic opportunities.

The proposal, fronted by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, was welcomed by Bugisu cultural institution spokesperson Steven Masiga, who described it as a major milestone for the region.

Masiga made the remarks during a two-day stakeholders’ training workshop held in Mbale City, where tourism actors were sensitised on preparations and opportunities linked to hosting the global event.

Officials indicated that Bugisu would host a month-long calendar of events leading up to the main celebrations, positioning the region as a key tourism destination.

Masiga urged local stakeholders, particularly hotel owners and schools, to take advantage of the opportunity. “This is a chance for Bugisu to showcase its cultural heritage and tourism potential. Stakeholders must prepare early to fully benefit,” he said.

Imbalu Ceremony to Draw Global Attention

Masiga also revealed that the upcoming Imbalu circumcision ceremony launch, scheduled for August 1, is expected to attract international dignitaries, including cultural leaders and business delegations from countries such as Nigeria and Cameroon.

He further disclosed that Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the President of Kenya are expected to attend the event, which is one of the region’s most significant cultural ceremonies.

The spokesperson called on the private sector to support preparations, noting that such high-profile events will drive tourism and revenue generation. “Revenue is going to follow in Bugisu with the hosting of these events,” Masiga said.

The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, brought together local leaders, hospitality players, and tourism officers to align strategies for hosting the international event.

Among those involved in coordination were officials from the ministry, including Harriet and Mbale tourism officer Winnie. Local leaders, including Mbale City Mayor Kassim Namugali and Assistant RCC Michael Nandala, also attended, signalling strong government backing for the initiative.
