Schools urged to focus on values as Kamuli education officer retires

Private school directors hand over an envelope to retired Education Officer Joseph Musoke as a token of appreciation during his send-off in Kamuli.

Kamuli, Uganda: Private school proprietors and education leaders in Kamuli Municipality have been urged to prioritise nurturing values and life skills among learners over profit-making, as they bid farewell to retiring Municipal Education Officer Joseph Musoke.

The call was made during a send-off ceremony held at Central College Kamuli on April 17, 2026, in recognition of Musoke’s contribution to improving education standards in the municipality.

Musoke challenged school owners to view education as a service to society rather than a commercial venture, emphasizing the growing role of schools as substitute parents.

“Education is not a business but a service to the people. Schools must go beyond academics and nurture values, morals, and life skills,” he said.

He urged educators to embrace creativity, innovation, and compassion in shaping learners into responsible citizens.

Reflecting on his tenure, Musoke said he retires with pride, having transformed education standards in Kamuli District. He noted that Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) first grades increased from 115 to 870 during his leadership, alongside improvements in data management and institutional trust.

“Have information at your fingertips, but do not let poverty drive you into wrong practices in this money economy,” he cautioned.

Leaders praise Musoke’s impact

Kamuli Municipality Private Schools Organising Committee Chairperson Laston Sempa commended Musoke for fostering professionalism and collaboration between private schools and government.

“Your guidance has made our schools more professional, competitive, and compliant with education standards,” Sempa said.

Private Schools Directors’ Chairperson George Byantuyo urged institutions to work closely with technical staff and embrace policy changes to remain relevant. He also urged schools to support teachers beyond salaries, encouraging alternative income opportunities and preparation for retirement.

Education leaders emphasised the need for consultation, networking, and benchmarking among schools to improve quality.
