Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Communications Commission has launched investigations into Miracle Television (Channel 44 TV) and its founder, Pastor Robert Kayanja, over allegations of false and distorted broadcasting.

In a letter dated April 20, 2026, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo confirmed that the Commission had received a formal complaint and commenced inquiries under its statutory mandate.

The complaint, as referenced in the letter, alleges that Channel 44 aired church service broadcasts on March 19, 20 and 21, 2026, in which Pastor Kayanja made statements that distorted evidence presented in court.

According to UCC, the broadcasts misrepresented forensic evidence, misled the public, and were intended to ridicule defence lawyers involved in the case. The complaint further asserts that the remarks diluted the credibility of expert testimony and introduced unverified claims regarding court proceedings.

As part of the investigation, the Commission has directed Channel 44 TV to submit recordings of the impugned broadcasts alongside written representations addressing the allegations, with a deadline of not later than Monday, April 27, 2026, to comply with the directives.

Accordingly, UCC has also set Wednesday, April 29, as the date on which it will hold its formal hearing in the matter, where Channel 44 management is expected to appear with substantial representation, including Pastor Kayanja.

“Channel 44 TV is hereby required to send substantial representative(s)… including Pastor Robert Kayanja,” Nyombi’s letter reads in part, adding that failure to submit the required materials or attend the hearing will not halt investigations or prevent regulatory action.

Background

The alleged misleading broadcast is linked to coverage of a church service in which Pastor Kayanja reportedly addressed issues related to an ongoing criminal trial involving individuals connected to his ministry.

The case, which has drawn public attention, involves allegations previously raised against Kayanja by individuals who later became defendants in court proceedings.

During the broadcasts, it is alleged that commentary on forensic evidence and court proceedings was presented in a manner now under scrutiny by regulators.

Media analysts note that religious broadcasts touching on active court matters are subject to heightened scrutiny, as they carry the risk of influencing public perception, misrepresenting evidence, or undermining judicial processes.

By press time, efforts to obtain a response from Channel 44 TV and Pastor Kayanja were still fruitless, with a series of unanswered calls and chats.
