Gulu City, Uganda: A serving police constable has been killed in a suspected domestic violence incident after she was allegedly stabbed by her boyfriend during a quarrel that escalated into a fatal confrontation in Gulu City.

The deceased, Harriet Akera (No. 82983), was attached to Namukosi Police Station in Mityana District. She was attacked on Wednesday afternoon in Library Cell, Bardege-Layibi Division.

Police have since arrested Denis Apire Brian, 26, who is accused of carrying out the stabbing following what investigators described as a heated disagreement.

According to Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong, the two had been in a romantic relationship since 2023, but recent misunderstandings had strained their relationship.

“The deceased and the suspect have been in a love relationship since 2023. However, recently they developed misunderstandings which are still under investigation,” Ongom said.

Police say Constable Akera travelled from Mityana to Gulu in an attempt to resolve the conflict.

Investigations indicate that she first met the suspect at Flamingo Guest House, where they talked and later separated before agreeing to meet again.

“It is alleged that she came to Gulu and first met the suspect at Flamingo Guest House where they talked and later parted ways. She later called him again and they agreed to meet for a second time,” Ongom explained.

It was during this second meeting that the situation reportedly turned violent. “During the meeting, a quarrel broke out and escalated. The suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the back, causing severe bleeding,” he added.

The injured officer was rushed to Victory Health Centre before being referred to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, where she later died.

A medical worker described her condition as critical upon arrival, noting that efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

Police have recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack, now held as key evidence in the ongoing murder investigation.

Authorities confirmed that statements have been recorded and a case file is being prepared for prosecution.

“Once the file is sanctioned, the suspect will be arraigned in court,” Ongom said.

Police condemned the killing and urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. We encourage members of the public to avoid violence and seek peaceful resolution of misunderstandings,” he added.

The killing adds to growing concern over domestic violence and homicide cases in Uganda.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, domestic violence-related incidents remain among the most reported crimes, with over 14,000 cases of domestic violence recorded nationwide.

The report further indicates that murder cases stood at over 4,200, with a significant proportion linked to interpersonal conflicts, including domestic disputes.

Police data shows that many of these incidents arise from relationship disagreements that escalate into violence, highlighting persistent gaps in conflict resolution and mental health support.

The incident has left residents and colleagues of Constable Akera in shock, with many describing her as a disciplined and hardworking officer whose life was cut short.

Police have appealed for calm as investigations continue.
