Kamuli, Uganda: Patriotism training is increasingly reshaping discipline, resilience, and civic responsibility among students in Kamuli District, with school leaders reporting noticeable improvements in behaviour and academic focus.
The impact was highlighted during a pass-out ceremony of 430 students at Kyabazinga College School in Budhumbula Ward, Kamuli Municipality, where education and government leaders praised the programme’s growing influence.
Headteacher Wanume Hussein said the introduction of patriotism training has significantly improved student conduct and focus.
“We have seen a significant change in our students since the introduction of patriotism training. The emphasis on discipline, hard work, and national pride has made our students more responsible and focused,” he said.
Wanume added that beyond discipline, the programme is shaping students’ mindset and life direction. “Our students are now more confident and determined to make a positive impact in their communities. They are learning to put the needs of others before their own.”

The Busoga regional patriotism coordinator, Ngobi Charles, said the initiative has become a routine component in schools, with visible behavioural change among learners.

“Students are more disciplined, respectful, and committed to their studies. They are becoming better citizens, and that is the goal of this programme,” he said.
Kamuli Resident District Commissioner Rose Birungi, who presided over the ceremony, described patriotism as a key pillar in shaping responsible citizens.
“Patriotism is one of the core values of government, and it is essential that we instill it in our children from a young age. It helps build citizens who are committed to national development,” Birungi said.
She also urged parents to prioritise education and keep children in school. “As parents, it is important to ensure that children remain in school. Education is key to our nation’s future, and we must all play our role.”

The patriotism programme, which includes drills, community service, and lessons on national values, is aimed at nurturing discipline, leadership, and civic responsibility among learners.
Teachers and administrators say the results are already visible, with improved student engagement, respect for authority, and academic performance reported across participating schools.
