Terego, Uganda: Police in Terego District have arrested one suspect as investigations intensify into the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old boda boda rider in a brazen daytime attack.

The victim, Yamindu Bill, a resident of Ora Village in Olua Parish, Katrini Sub-county, was shot dead near Katrini Secondary School on Tuesday morning at around 10:00am. The incident was reported to police shortly after at 10:30am.

According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Josephine Angucia, the assailants, two unidentified men, allegedly hired the deceased from a boda boda stage at Ojipaku Trading Centre before directing him along Katrini Secondary School Road.

“It’s alleged that the two assailants hired the deceased as a boda boda rider and moved with him towards Katrini Secondary School,” Angucia said.

She explained that the suspects later ordered the rider to turn back after spotting people ahead in nearby gardens, before executing the attack.

“In the process of turning, the hooded assailants pulled out a gun from their back bag and shot the rider from the right side of the back. They then took off with the motorcycle and fled to an unknown destination,” she added.

The stolen motorcycle, described as a red Bajaj, had not yet been assigned a number plate at the time of the incident.

Police visited and documented the crime scene, recorded witness statements, and conveyed the body to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination.

One suspect, identified as Otori Moses, was arrested with the help of community members and is currently assisting police with investigations.

The case has been registered under Terego District CRB 152/2026, with efforts ongoing to track down the remaining suspects, recover the firearm used in the attack, and trace the stolen motorcycle.

Angucia warned that the presence of illegal firearms in communities continues to pose a serious threat to public safety.

“The longer this gun remains in the hands of wrong elements, the more cases of gun violence will be registered in the communities,” she said, urging the public to provide any information that could aid investigations.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, gun-related robberies and violent attacks remain a concern in parts of the country, particularly involving targeted attacks on riders and individuals transporting or perceived to be carrying money or valuables.
