Kampala, Uganda: Government has announced a three-day nationwide prayer programme ahead of the swearing-in of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on May 12, 2026, as part of spiritual preparations for the next five-year term.

The prayers, scheduled from May 8 to May 10, will take place across mosques and churches nationwide, according to Yunus Kakande, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President.

Speaking on May 4, Kakande said the initiative is aimed at grounding national leadership in faith and unity.

“We are going to organise prayers across the entire country… on Friday we’ll be in all mosques, on Saturday in Adventist churches, and on Sunday in all Christian churches,” he said.

He added that government officials will be deployed across places of worship to represent the state, underscoring the role of faith in governance.

“When you say ‘For God and My Country’, you must put it into action. Everything goes with prayer,” Kakande emphasised.

Spiritual Preparation for Leadership

Kakande said the prayers will focus on seeking divine guidance, good health, and stability for the President and the country.

“We have to pray for our President to give him life for the next five years and to give Uganda stability,” he noted.

He also pointed to global conflicts as a reminder of the importance of peace and unity, urging Ugandans to embrace prayer as a daily practice.

Kololo Set for Major Ceremony

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds are in advanced stages, with the event expected to draw both local and international dignitaries.

Kakande confirmed that the ceremony will be open to the public, with no invitation cards required, and encouraged citizens to attend in large numbers.

Organisers anticipate attendance by up to 50 heads of state and government, highlighting Uganda’s regional and international standing.

Each district has also been allocated 50 slots to ensure national representation at the ceremony.

Election Context

President Museveni, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), secured victory in the 2026 presidential election with 7.9 million votes (71.65%), defeating Robert Kyagulanyi, who garnered 2.74 million votes (24.72%), according to the Electoral Commission.
