What Ugandans should expect tonight at NRM’s drone show in Kampala skies

The aerial display, expected to light up sections of Kampala’s evening skyline, forms part of the NRM’s broader mobilization and entertainment activities leading to the May 12 inauguration at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Kampala, Uganda: Residents and supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement in Kampala and the metropolitan districts of Mukono, Entebbe and Wakiso are expected to witness a spectacular drone light show tonight as part of celebrations and build-up activities ahead of President-elect Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony.

The aerial display, expected to light up sections of Kampala’s evening skyline, forms part of the NRM’s broader mobilization and entertainment activities leading to the May 12 inauguration at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows use hundreds of synchronized unmanned aerial devices equipped with LED lights to create moving images, symbols, animations and messages in the sky.

The drones are controlled through specialized software that coordinates their movements, allowing them to form patterns, portraits, national symbols and political messages visible from long distances.

Globally, drone light shows have increasingly become popular at national celebrations, sporting events, concerts and political ceremonies because they are quieter, environmentally friendlier and visually dynamic compared to fireworks.

What to Expect in Kampala

Tonight’s show is expected to feature patriotic displays, Ugandan national colours, NRM-themed symbols and visual animations linked to President Museveni’s inauguration celebrations.

Sources involved in preparations say spectators should expect aerial formations showcasing Uganda’s flag colours, symbolic political imagery and messages celebrating continuity, unity and peace.

The display is likely to be visible from several parts of Kampala, especially areas surrounding Kololo, Nakasero, Lugogo, Naguru and nearby suburbs, depending on weather conditions and visibility.

Security and technical teams have reportedly been coordinating the operation to ensure public safety and smooth execution of the aerial performance.

Part of Inauguration Celebrations

The drone show comes amid intensified mobilization activities across the country ahead of Museveni’s swearing-in for another term in office after winning the 2026 presidential election.

Government and NRM officials have in recent days organized nationwide prayers, mobilization campaigns, clean-up exercises and public engagements as part of the inauguration build-up.

At least 34 international delegations are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which government has described as a major national event attracting regional and international attention.

Traffic and Public Advisory

Security authorities have since heightened security presence in Kampala during the event, with police heavily deployed to guide traffic around areas expected to attract large crowds.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary panic upon seeing multiple lights moving in formation across the night sky, as the activity is part of the planned inauguration celebrations.

Drone experts note that such displays require precision programming and stable weather conditions, meaning visibility may vary depending on wind, rain or cloud cover.

For many Kampala residents, tonight’s spectacle will mark the first large-scale political drone show witnessed in Uganda’s skies.
