Sironko, Uganda: For years, Sironko’s daughter, Mafabi Asha Nabulo, remained a familiar face across the hills and trading centres of the Bugisu District long before finally securing the Woman Member of Parliament seat for the 2026–2031 term.
To many residents, Asha Nabulo was not first known as a politician, but as a grassroots mobiliser, philanthropist, education sponsor and community development advocate whose name steadily gained prominence through the activities of the Mafabi Asha Foundation (MAF).
But after years of political persistence, extensive community work and growing influence within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), she was officially sworn in as Sironko District Woman MP, marking the latest chapter in a journey shaped by resilience, ambition and grassroots engagement.
Humble beginnings
Born and raised in Bugisu sub-region, Asha Nabulo is the firstborn daughter of businessman and veteran NRM mobiliser Hajj Mafabi Suleiman Lumolo, the long-serving NRM chairperson for Sironko District.
Her upbringing exposed her early to politics, entrepreneurship and public mobilisation, experiences that would later influence both her development work and political ambitions.
According to her biography, Nabulo actively participated in mobilisation efforts and local development activities while growing up, gradually developing a passion for public service and community empowerment.
Friends and supporters describe her as calm, approachable and deeply connected to grassroots structures across Sironko and the wider Elgon region.

International education and policy grounding
Unlike many first-time legislators, Nabulo enters Parliament with a diverse international academic background. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Business from INTI International University in Malaysia, where she reportedly drew inspiration from Malaysia’s transformation into a modern industrial economy.
She later obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom and a Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
Currently, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree at IUIU in Mbale, a move she says is intended to strengthen her policy and legislative capabilities.
Her academic journey has largely shaped her interest in financial inclusion, youth empowerment, women entrepreneurship and community-based economic development.
Building influence through philanthropy
Much of Nabulo’s political rise has been tied to the rapid growth of the Mafabi Asha Foundation, a community-based organisation she founded in 2020.
Through the foundation, she spearheaded a wide range of interventions across Sironko, Mbale, Bulambuli, Bududa and parts of Sebei sub-region.

The initiatives ranged from vocational skilling for youth and teenage mothers, women empowerment projects, education sponsorships, SACCO support programmes, agricultural projects, healthcare outreach camps and water access initiatives.
The foundation also distributed tailoring machines, supported widows’ groups, sponsored students, installed water systems, donated sanitary pads to schoolgirls and provided relief support during disasters such as landslides and floods in the Elgon region.
Her supporters argue that these initiatives helped build trust among ordinary residents long before she formally secured elected office.
Political resilience
Nabulo’s first contested for the Sironko Woman MP seat in 2021 under the NRM ticket but narrowly lost to Florence Nambozo, who contested as an Independent candidate.
However, rather than retreat from politics, she remained active within the district, continuing community mobilisation and maintaining visibility through development programmes.
Her political standing grew further in May 2025 after she publicly reconciled with Nambozo during the Sironko NRA/NRM Victory Day celebrations, a move widely viewed as a significant gesture of political maturity and party unity.
The reconciliation strengthened her position within NRM structures ahead of the 2026 elections.
She was later declared unopposed as the NRM flag bearer for the Sironko District Woman MP race, effectively cementing her path to Parliament.

Leadership philosophy
Nabulo’s political messaging revolves around what she describes as “service-driven leadership.” Her personal mantra, according to her biography, is: “My greatest honour is to serve my nation.”
She strongly advocates for youth skilling, women empowerment, cooperative development, climate resilience and vocational education.
Her leadership approach combines grassroots mobilisation with policy-oriented thinking, something political observers believe could shape her legislative priorities in Parliament.
Nabulo’s election also reflects a broader political shift in Uganda where younger, development-oriented leaders with strong grassroots networks are increasingly gaining political traction.

At the swearing-in ceremony for the 12th Parliament, Asha pledged to prioritise the interests of Sironko residents and Bugisu sub-region in national decision-making.
“This position is not my position. It is a position for the people. I am simply their mouthpiece to deliver their grievances,” she told journalists shortly after taking oath.
As she begins her first parliamentary term, expectations remain high among supporters who view her as both a bridge between grassroots communities and government programmes, and as part of a rising generation of female political leaders within Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
