Kampala, Uganda: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has revealed that the controversial Rolls-Royce vehicle belonging to former speaker Anita Annet Among has been “captured” and will be auctioned to recover what he described as “funds of the state.”
In a fresh post shared on his official X account on Tuesday evening, the First Son confirmed the development, saying: “We captured the Rolls-Royce. It’s under our control. We shall auction it and recover the funds of the state.”
His statement is the latest escalation in the ongoing political storm surrounding the embattled outgoing Speaker, whose reported acquisition of a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle sparked widespread public debate and internal tensions within sections of the ruling establishment.
The controversy erupted days ago after images and reports circulated online alleging that Among had acquired a Rolls-Royce said to be worth billions of shillings.
The luxury vehicle quickly became a lightning rod for criticism amid growing public frustration over corruption, unemployment and rising living costs.
Although Among reportedly maintained that the vehicle was a gift, the matter rapidly evolved into a broader political and anti-corruption debate, with Gen Muhoozi and allied groups within his Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) organization openly attacking extravagant spending by public officials.
At one point, Muhoozi remarked: “I have been Mzee’s son for 52 years but I have never sat in a Rolls-Royce ever. I don’t think Mzee has sat in one either.”
Political fallout
The Rolls-Royce controversy coincided with mounting pressure on Among ahead of the 12th Parliament Speakership race.
On Sunday night, the Speaker announced she would no longer seek re-election, pledging support for candidates endorsed by President Museveni and the NRM.
Her withdrawal followed growing political isolation, public criticism and reports of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of office involving parliamentary officials.
Security agencies have, for the last couple of days, carried out operations linked to investigations into parliamentary expenditure and procurement matters.
But Muhoozi’s latest statement has now triggered fresh questions regarding the legal status of the vehicle, the authority under which it was allegedly seized, and whether any formal state process has been initiated regarding confiscation or auctioning.
By press time, no official statement had yet been issued by police, the Inspectorate of Government, Parliament, or any other government institution confirming the seizure of the vehicle or plans for a public auction.
However, the remarks have already intensified political discussion online, with supporters portraying the move as part of a wider anti-corruption crackdown, while critics questioned the legal and procedural implications of such public declarations.
