UPDF passes out 63 signal personnel at 3 Infantry Division

Deputy Division Commander, Brig Gen Allan Kyangungu, commended the UPDF leadership for decentralising the course to division level, saying the localised training model had produced an exceptional group of combatants.

Moroto, Uganda: The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has passed out 63 Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) who successfully completed a six-month Communication, Information, Technology and Signals (CITS) Level III course at the division headquarters.

The pass-out ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Division Commander, Brig Gen Allan Kyangungu, who praised the soldiers for completing the specialised technical training programme.

Brig Gen Kyangungu commended the UPDF leadership for decentralising the course to division level, saying the localised training model had produced an exceptional group of combatants.

He particularly applauded the trainees for their discipline and impressive performance during foot drills. “The foundation of a soldier is being able to perfect drill before any speciality,” Brig Gen Kyangungu said.

The senior officer also commended unit commanders for encouraging the participation of female combatants in the signals course, describing it as a positive step toward inclusiveness within the force.

He urged the graduates to use the qualification as a stepping stone for further professional advancement within the military.

At the same time, Brig Gen Kyangungu cautioned the soldiers against irresponsible use of social media, especially regarding military communication and operational security.

Communication critical to operations

Speaking during the ceremony, the Division Operations and Training Officer (DOTO), Col Santorino Tumuryanze, reminded the graduates that their military journey was only beginning despite completing the course.

“You have all come from far and are yet to go far,” Col Tumuryanze said. He stressed that effective communication and signals systems remain central to the success of modern UPDF operations.

Col Tumuryanze further encouraged the graduates to remain committed to duty while maintaining physical fitness and medical readiness.

The Chief Instructor of the School of CITS, Maj Charles Kiiza, speaking on behalf of the Commandant Lt Col B. Okol, expressed confidence in the graduates’ preparedness to undertake responsibilities within the UPDF signals branch.

Best performers recognised

During the ceremony, several trainees were recognised for outstanding performance throughout the course.

Pte Adong Josephine emerged as the overall best student, while L/Cpl Musoda Umar received the award for best leadership.

Pte Kasada Richard Peter was recognised as the most disciplined trainee, while Pte Chemuatai Lillian was also among the distinguished performers honoured during the event.

The ceremony attracted brigade commanders, senior and junior officers, as well as Non-Commissioned Officers from across the 3 Infantry Division.

The event was officiated under the office of the Public Information Officer (PIO) 3 Division, Capt Kato Ahmad Hassan.
