Kaliro, Uganda: Leaders in Kaliro District have been urged to put aside political differences arising from the recently concluded elections and focus on coordinated service delivery and development as the country begins a new five-year political term.
The call was made by the Kaliro District ONC Coordinator, Wabwire Andrew, while speaking at a thanksgiving function hosted by Kaliro District Woman MP Namukuta Brenda at Gunnery Grounds in Bulumba Town Council.
Addressing political leaders and residents, Wabwire emphasized the need for unity among elected leaders following the swearing-in of President Yoweri Museveni, Members of Parliament, and District Local Council leaders.
“We are now in a new government and a new term. Leaders must move beyond electoral divisions and focus on delivering tangible results for the communities they represent,” Wabwire said.
He called upon Hon. Namukuta Brenda, the district’s two constituency Members of Parliament, and the District LCV Chairperson to work together in developing a comprehensive five-year work plan aimed at improving livelihoods and accelerating development in Kaliro.
Wabwire stressed that meaningful transformation can only be achieved through cooperation and collective leadership rather than continued political rivalry.
He particularly urged Members of Parliament to rise above political affiliations and prioritize the needs of the people who entrusted them with leadership responsibilities.
The ONC Coordinator also appealed to the District LCV Chairperson to maintain close collaboration with legislators to ensure effective implementation and monitoring of government programmes across the district.
Wabwire expressed concern that some leaders had already shifted focus toward the 2031 elections despite only recently assuming office.
According to him, early political manoeuvring risks distracting leaders from delivering on campaign promises and undermining public trust in governance institutions.
He further highlighted the critical oversight role played by district councilors, urging them to fully understand their responsibilities and actively demand accountability from technical officers and departmental heads.
Wabwire cited cases where some councilors reportedly monitored road construction projects without access to Bills of Quantities (BOQs), warning that effective oversight cannot be achieved without proper documentation and technical information.
“Councilors must be equipped with all relevant information before undertaking monitoring activities,” he emphasized.
In his concluding remarks, Wabwire urged both leaders and residents to focus on ideas and initiatives that promote development rather than engaging in divisive politics.
“Kaliro cannot afford to remain divided over past elections. Let us rally behind the leaders chosen by the people and focus on building our district,” he said.
The thanksgiving event attracted local leaders, political supporters, and residents from across Kaliro District.
