Kampala, Uganda: A 22-year-old woman in Entebbe Municipality reportedly took her own life following a domestic dispute over Shs450,000 belonging to a local SACCO savings group, police have confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Carol Nakigudde, a resident of Kiwafu Parish in Kitooro Zone, allegedly stabbed herself in the neck during a heated confrontation with her husband, Husama Mukiibi, late Saturday night at around 11 pm.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the dispute stemmed from money that Nakigudde was expecting to receive from a local Savings and Credit Co-operative Organization (SACCO).
Police said the Shs450,000 payout had reportedly been delivered through her husband, who allegedly withheld the money from her, sparking an argument inside their home.
“It is alleged the money was delivered through the husband, but he did not give it to the wife. The deceased, Nakigudde Carol, picked a knife and allegedly stabbed herself around the neck,” Kawala said.
Authorities say Mukiibi reportedly attempted to stop his wife and disarm her during the confrontation, but the injury proved fatal before medical assistance could arrive.
Although the incident is currently being treated as a suspected suicide linked to a domestic dispute, police confirmed that investigations remain ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death and rule out any foul play.
Kawala urged members of the public experiencing domestic violence or family conflicts to seek help through the Police Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU) before situations escalate into tragedy.
The incident has once again drawn attention to rising cases of domestic conflict linked to financial stress and control of household income, particularly within community savings groups such as SACCOs.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, domestic violence and family-related disputes remain among the leading triggers of violent incidents reported across the country, with financial disagreements increasingly featuring prominently in household conflicts.
No arrests or charges had been announced by police as investigations continued.
