Istanbul, Turkey: Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for major silverware after dismantling SC Freiburg 3-0 to win the Europa League in Istanbul on Wednesday and crown an extraordinary rise under manager Unai Emery.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed a dominant final performance as Villa secured their first major trophy since 1996 and their first European title since lifting the European Cup in 1982.

The triumph further cemented Emery’s legendary status in the Europa League, with the Spaniard now winning the competition a record five times.

Before guiding Villa to glory, Emery had already lifted the trophy three consecutive times with Sevilla FC and once with Villarreal CF.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the speed of Villa’s transformation under the Spanish tactician.

When Emery arrived at Villa Park three and a half years ago, Aston Villa were hovering just outside the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference. Today, they are Europa League champions and an established force in European football.

Under Emery, Villa have now qualified for European competitions in three consecutive seasons and already secured a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League by sitting fourth in the Premier League table heading into the final day.

The victory in Istanbul sparked emotional celebrations among Villa supporters, many of whom had waited decades to witness the club return to Europe’s elite stage.

Tielemans opened the scoring with a composed finish before Buendia doubled Villa’s advantage to put the English side firmly in control.

England international Morgan Rogers then wrapped up the victory with Villa’s third goal, capping off a memorable night for the Midlands club.

The result could also have major implications elsewhere in the Premier League race for Europe.

Villa’s Europa League triumph means clubs such as AFC Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. could still sneak into the Champions League places by finishing sixth if Villa fall to fifth after their final league match against Manchester City F.C. on Sunday.
