Nwoya, Uganda: A new administration has officially assumed leadership of Nwoya District with newly elected District Chairperson Okello Patrick Oryema pledging to tackle poverty, unemployment, poor infrastructure, land conflicts and weak service delivery in health and education sectors.

Okello was on Tuesday sworn into office alongside a 22-member district council, promising to place the people of Nwoya at the centre of all government programs and interventions over the next five years.

Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office, Okello said his administration would focus on improving the welfare of ordinary citizens, especially unemployed youth, struggling mothers, farmers and vulnerable communities that rely on effective leadership for survival and development.

“We see every challenge as an opportunity for transformation,” Okello said. “The people of Nwoya will remain the central point of our programs and interventions.”

He directed both political leaders and the district technical team to ensure every government plan, budget and development program directly impacts residents and improves livelihoods across the district.

The oath of office for the new council was administered by Chief Magistrate Omara Innocent Daniel while instruments of power were officially handed over by Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Akubonabona Yusuf.

During the handover ceremony, Yusuf pledged the commitment of the district technical staff to support the new leadership through professional guidance and implementation of council resolutions.

He urged councillors to concentrate on legislation, representation and oversight while allowing technical officers to execute implementation duties in order to minimise conflict and improve efficiency in public service delivery.

Yusuf said the district should work towards transforming Nwoya into a modern and progressive district within the Acholi sub-region through accountable leadership, prudent resource management and effective public services.

He further called on the council to prioritise poverty eradication programs, youth and women empowerment initiatives, protection of vulnerable communities and creation of economic opportunities for residents.

Meanwhile, newly elected Nwoya District Woman Member of Parliament Christine Lanyero Awany challenged the district leadership to remain united and focused on development rather than political divisions.

Awany warned leaders against engaging in petty conflicts that could derail service delivery and instead encouraged stronger cooperation between elected leaders and the technical wing of the district.

Invoking President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s “Kisanja Hakuna Mchezo” message, commonly interpreted locally as “Kisanja No Sleep,” Awany urged leaders to remain hardworking, committed and accountable throughout their term of office.

The new district executive team unveiled by Chairperson Okello Patrick Oryema includes Aloyo Jennifer as Vice Chairperson, Ojok Holy Moses as Speaker and Ojok Jacob as Deputy Speaker.

Others appointed to the executive include Anena Eveline as Secretary for Social Services, Komakech Denis as Secretary for Works, Production, Marketing and Natural Resources, and Opiyo Daniel Okumu as Secretary for Finance, Planning and Administration.

The new leadership now faces growing public expectations to translate campaign promises into practical solutions that will improve livelihoods, strengthen service delivery and accelerate socio-economic transformation in Nwoya District.
