BUTALEJA, Uganda: Farmers under Kaiti Modern Farmers Group in Butaleja District have launched Uganda’s first project under the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture programme after breaking ground for a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) structure aimed at boosting household incomes and commercial farming.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Kaiti A Village in Naweyo Sub-county, attracting farmers, district leaders and technical officers who hailed the initiative as a major step towards climate-smart agriculture and poverty eradication.

The function was presided over by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Butaleja, Kasivini Erisama, who commended the farmers for embracing government programmes focused on wealth creation and improved livelihoods.

Under the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture programme, beneficiaries are required to contribute 20 percent of the total project cost while government provides 80 percent funding support.

Officials revealed that Kaiti Modern Farmers Group mobilised Shs11.8 million as co-funding, which enabled the group to secure government support worth Shs59.3 million towards the Black Soldier Fly value chain project.

Butaleja District Production Officer Amina Dugo praised the farmers for fulfilling all programme requirements, describing the group as the first in both Butaleja District and Uganda to successfully redeem its package under the arrangement.

She urged members to remain focused and committed to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the project.

The district Secretary for Production, Allen Were, advised women participating in the initiative to maintain unity and mutual respect within their families even as household incomes improve.

Project focal person Swama Charles commended the farmers for successfully mobilising the required co-funding, noting that many groups across the country often struggle to meet such conditions.

He pledged continued technical support and guidance to ensure effective implementation of the project.

District entomologist Tito Mutume also promised continuous support in maggot production and market linkages, saying the demand for Black Soldier Fly products remains high.

According to Mutume, the project is projected to generate up to Shs2 million weekly once fully operational.

Erisama further cautioned members against internal conflicts, rumours and divisions that could undermine the progress of the group and affect the success of the investment.

During the event, Dauth Trust Investment Company officially received the construction site ahead of the commencement of works.

Members of Kaiti Modern Farmers Group thanked government for the support extended through the climate-smart agriculture programme and pledged to use the project to fight poverty and transform livelihoods in the community.
