KYANKWANZI, Uganda: The African Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (AIBIS) Agroecology Demonstration Farm in Kigoma Ward, Masodde-Kalagi Town Council, has been selected as one of the official training centres for farmers and agricultural groups under the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) programme in Kyankwanzi District.

The development is expected to strengthen efforts to equip farmers with practical skills in sustainable agriculture, wealth creation and modern farming practices aimed at improving household incomes.

Kigoma Ward Councillor Ms Rebecca Byekwaso confirmed to AIBIS on May 22 that the organisation was chosen because of its proven track record in promoting agroecology and practical mixed farming systems.

“The government PDM programme is serious about poverty alleviation and its trainings are therefore tailored to demonstrate actual success stories on the ground as opposed to just following theoretical and abstract examples,” Byekwaso said.

She noted that AIBIS has consistently demonstrated commitment to community empowerment through farmer training, environmental conservation and sustainable agricultural production, making it a suitable partner for the programme.

According to the councillor, the organisation’s well-established infrastructure and ability to accommodate large groups of trainees also influenced the Town Council’s decision.

Byekwaso added that details regarding the training schedules, methodologies and targeted beneficiary groups will be communicated in due course as implementation plans are finalized.

The Parish Development Model remains the government’s flagship poverty eradication programme aimed at transitioning households from subsistence farming to the money economy through increased access to production support, financial services and agricultural extension.

Receiving the communication on behalf of AIBIS, the organisation’s Programmes Coordinator, Ms Peruth Atukwatse, welcomed the decision and pledged full cooperation with local authorities to ensure the initiative succeeds.

“We are really happy that we have been chosen to offer this noble community service,” Atukwatse said.

She said AIBIS remains committed to sharing practical knowledge that enables farmers to improve productivity while protecting the environment.

AIBIS currently trains both individual farmers and organised farmer groups in organic farming techniques, with particular emphasis on the production and use of organic fertilizers, natural pesticides and other agroecological practices that promote sustainable food production.

The organisation’s demonstration farm has in recent months become a key learning hub for farmers, students, environmental enthusiasts and agritourists seeking hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture.

The selection further cements AIBIS’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence in agroecology, biodiversity conservation and community-based agricultural development in Uganda.
