Kitara FC players celebrate after defeating SC Villa 2-1 to win the 2026 Stanbic Uganda Cup final at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

Njeru, Uganda: Kitara FC were crowned champions of the 2026 Stanbic Uganda Cup after defeating SC Villa 2-1 in a thrilling final played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Saturday.

The Hoima-based side came from behind to secure their second Uganda Cup triumph in three seasons, further cementing their growing status among Uganda’s football elite.

SC Villa made a brighter start and broke the deadlock in the 10th minute through Simon Kato Ssemayange, sending the Jogoos faithful into celebration.

However, their lead lasted only three minutes as Kitara responded immediately. Under pressure from Kitara attackers, Villa defender Missi Diego Semugera inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, restoring parity at 1-1.

The remainder of the first half was evenly contested, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find another breakthrough before the interval.

Kitara emerged from the dressing room with renewed intensity and completed the comeback just two minutes into the second half. Midfielder Jimmy Kalema struck decisively in the 47th minute to hand the Royals a 2-1 lead.

Despite sustained pressure from SC Villa as they searched for an equaliser, Kitara remained disciplined defensively and managed the game effectively until the final whistle.

The victory hands Kitara their second Stanbic Uganda Cup title following their maiden triumph in 2024, when they defeated NEC FC 1-0 in the final.

The latest success also crowns a remarkable rise for the Hoima club, which has transformed itself into one of the country’s most competitive sides in recent seasons.

For SC Villa, the defeat ends hopes of winning a record-equalling 10th Uganda Cup title. The Jogoos remain among the competition’s most successful clubs, having previously lifted the trophy in 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2008-09 and 2014-15.

While Villa’s wait for a 10th title continues, Kitara will now turn their attention to representing Uganda on the continental stage after securing qualification for the next CAF Confederation Cup.
