Budaka, Uganda: Police in Budaka District are hunting for two suspects accused of attacking and critically injuring a 58-year-old man in what authorities are investigating as an attempted murder case.
The victim, identified as Maiso Supulemu Peter, a resident of Bukaligwoko Village in Nanzala Parish, Kameruka Sub-county, sustained severe machete wounds to the head and face during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa said the incident occurred at around 7:00 pm on June 1, 2026, and the case was reported by the LC I Chairperson of Bukaligwoko Village, Mpyangu Moses, shortly after the attack.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Maiso was inside his kitchen with his wife, Naikesa Robinah, when one of the suspects, identified as Mugombesya Moses, allegedly called him outside.
Police say that upon stepping out, the victim was allegedly confronted by the suspect, who reportedly warned him not to raise an alarm before attacking him with a panga.
A second suspect, identified as Nalenyo Stephano, is also alleged to have been present during the assault.
The victim’s wife reportedly raised an alarm, attracting neighbours, including Ivan and co-wife Nankoma Sylvia, who rushed to the scene.
By the time residents arrived, the suspects had allegedly fled, leaving the victim unconscious in a pool of blood.
Community members quickly organised transport and rushed Maiso to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
“The victim was cut several times on the head and face and is currently still in critical condition. The hunt for the suspects is ongoing,” ASP Kyempasa said.
Police have registered the matter under Budaka District CRB 237/2026 and investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and apprehend the suspects.
The incident adds to Uganda’s continuing challenge of assault-related offences. According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, assault cases remained among the country’s most reported violent crimes, with thousands of incidents registered nationwide, highlighting the persistent threat of interpersonal violence within communities.
Police have urged members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to report to the nearest police station to aid ongoing investigations.
