Sironko, Uganda: The Bugisu Cultural Institution has called on President Museveni to support a public and transparent trial of suspects arrested in connection with the mob killing of Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, arguing that the case should serve as a national lesson on the dangers of mob justice.

The appeal was made by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr Steven Masiga, following the death of Gongodyo, who was allegedly attacked by a mob in Kampala on June 5 after being accused of theft.

According to police, up to eight suspects have since been arrested and are assisting with investigations into the incident that has shocked the sporting fraternity and sparked renewed debate about mob justice in Uganda.

Gongodyo, 27, was a Rugby Cranes international, a player for Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, a Makerere University student and father of two children. He was the son of Mr James Gyabi, a former Resident State Attorney who served in Gulu and Jinja. The family hails from Sironko District.

Speaking on behalf of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Masiga said the killing had deeply affected the Bamasaba community, describing it as a tragic loss of a promising young Ugandan.

“As a cultural institution, an attack on one of our people is felt across the entire community. We are deeply saddened by the circumstances under which Sydney Gongodyo lost his life,” Masiga said.

He urged President Museveni and justice sector institutions to ensure that the case is handled openly and expeditiously so that it sends a strong message against mob violence and reinforces public confidence in the rule of law.

Masiga argued that a public trial would help educate Ugandans about the consequences of taking the law into their own hands and discourage future incidents of mob justice.

“We want this case to become a lesson to society. No individual should be condemned, punished or killed on the basis of mere suspicion. Every accused person deserves a fair hearing before a competent court of law,” he said.

The spokesperson emphasized that Uganda’s Constitution guarantees the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and warned against the growing tendency of crowds acting as judge, jury and executioner.

“In Uganda, the law is clear. An accused person remains innocent until proven guilty. What happened to Gongodyo should remind all citizens that criminal allegations must be handled by lawful authorities and not by angry mobs,” Masiga added.

The cultural institution also called upon security agencies to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that all those found responsible for the attack are held accountable through the courts.

Gongodyo’s death has reignited concerns over mob justice, a practice that human rights advocates and law enforcement agencies have repeatedly condemned for undermining constitutional rights and due process.

The late rugby star will be laid to rest in Sironko District on Tuesday, June 09, where family, friends and members of the sporting community gathered to mourn his untimely death.

His killing has become one of the most high-profile mob justice cases in recent years, with many hoping it will trigger renewed efforts to combat vigilante violence and strengthen respect for the rule of law.
