Kamuli, Uganda: Kamuli District LCV Chairperson Hon. Kaloli Dhizaala has commissioned a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at Kamuli Township Primary School, a facility expected to enhance digital literacy and improve access to technology among learners and community members.

The centre, launched on Wednesday, June 10, was donated by Mr. John Gibing, a Ugandan based in the United States, in partnership with the Uganda Development Service (UDS).

Speaking at the event, Hon. Dhizaala said the facility would help address the technology gap that continues to affect many rural and semi-urban communities.

“This centre will help improve ICT in our communities. Learners and youth will now have access to computers and internet services. We thank Mr. John Gibing and UDS for this donation that will equip our people with digital skills for the modern job market,” Dhizaala said.

He urged residents to embrace technology, noting that digital skills are increasingly becoming essential for education, employment, and business opportunities. “Technology is the way to go. Our communities must embrace it if we are to compete in the modern world,” he added.

Boosting Digital Skills

The new ICT Centre is expected to provide computer literacy training, internet access, research opportunities, and digital skills development programmes for both pupils and members of the surrounding community.

Advocate for children’s rights Prudence Ayong Plot welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative investment in the future of young people.

“Our community, especially young children, has been facing hardship in accessing technology. Since technology is everything for the future, it is a privilege for the people to be equipped with these skills,” she said.

For many learners, the facility represents their first practical opportunity to interact with computers.

Sarah Namukose, a Primary Six pupil at Kamuli Township Primary School, expressed excitement about the centre’s potential impact on learning.

“We are very happy because we have been learning computers only in theory. Now we shall practice and learn how to use the internet for research. This will help us pass our PLE and join good secondary schools,” she said.

Local youth also welcomed the development, saying it will reduce the cost and inconvenience of travelling long distances to access computer services.

James Mugerwa, a resident of Buwengempya Cell in Kamuli Municipality, said many young people have been forced to travel to Jinja City for basic ICT services.

“As youth, we have been travelling to Jinja to access computer services, which is expensive. With this centre here in Kamuli, we can learn typing, CV writing, and online jobs without spending a lot of money. We thank the donor,” Mugerwa said.

The Head Teacher of Kamuli Township Primary School, Mr. Benge John, noted that inadequate ICT infrastructure has remained one of the biggest challenges affecting learners, particularly in rural schools. He said the centre will significantly improve the quality of learning and help pupils acquire skills that are increasingly necessary in today’s digital economy.

Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for increased investment in ICT infrastructure across Uganda’s schools to support the government’s digital transformation agenda.

The launch of the Kamuli ICT Centre is expected to contribute towards those efforts by providing practical technology exposure to learners and strengthening digital literacy within the wider community.

As Uganda continues to embrace digital innovation, leaders hope such initiatives will help prepare young people for future opportunities in education, employment, entrepreneurship, and the global digital economy.
