Pallisa, Uganda: Police in Pallisa District have launched investigations into the death of a 61-year-old man who was found hanging inside his house in what authorities suspect could be a case of suicide.
The deceased has been identified as Opolot Michael, a resident of Omalingai Village, Agule Parish in Pallisa District.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident was reported to Agule Police Station on Tuesday by the deceased’s brother, Onaset Hanington, after he allegedly discovered Opolot’s body hanging inside his residence.
Police officers, including a Scene of Crime team, immediately responded to the report and visited the scene to document evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa confirmed the incident, noting that detectives are treating the matter as a suspected suicide pending the outcome of further investigations.
“The dead body is to be taken to Mbale City Mortuary for postmortem as the scene seemed to be suspicious,” ASP Kyempasa said in a flash incident report issued on June 9, 2026.
Police have not disclosed whether any note or evidence indicating the deceased’s motive was recovered from the scene.
Investigators are now interviewing family members, neighbours and other potential witnesses as they seek to establish the events leading up to the death.
The body has been transferred to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, which police say will help determine the exact cause of death and whether foul play may have been involved.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow detectives to complete their investigations before drawing conclusions.
A comprehensive police report is expected once the postmortem findings and witness statements have been reviewed.
The latest incident adds to a growing concern over unexplained deaths and mental health challenges affecting communities across the country, with experts increasingly calling for greater awareness, counselling services and early intervention for individuals experiencing emotional distress.
