2026 WORLD CUP: Here Are 20 Records That Could Be Broken This Year

Cristiano Ronaldo is already the only player in history to score in five separate World Cup editions. If he finds the net in 2026, the Portuguese superstar will become the first footballer ever to score in six different World Cups.

Mexico City, Mexico: The FIFA World Cup 2026 is already making history as the biggest tournament ever staged, but it could also become one of the most record-breaking editions in football history.

With legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo potentially playing their final World Cups, Kylian Mbappé chasing goal-scoring immortality, and traditional powerhouses seeking to rewrite history, at least 20 major records could be equalled, surpassed or extended during the six-week tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Data compiled by ActionNetwork.com highlights a remarkable list of milestones that could fall before the final whistle is blown on July 19.

PLAYER RECORDS UNDER THREAT

1. Messi or Mbappé Could Break the World Cup Scoring Record

Germany legend Miroslav Klose currently holds the all-time World Cup scoring record with 16 goals. But Lionel Messi enters the tournament with 13 World Cup goals, while France’s Kylian Mbappé already has 12, meaning both players have a realistic chance of matching or surpassing the record.

2. Ronaldo Could Score in Six Different World Cups

Cristiano Ronaldo is already the only player in history to score in five separate World Cup editions. If he finds the net in 2026, the Portuguese superstar will become the first footballer ever to score in six different World Cups.

3. Messi Set to Extend Match Appearance Record

Messi currently holds the record for most World Cup matches played with 26 appearances. Assuming he features in Argentina’s group-stage matches alone, he will push that record beyond 29 games.

4. Messi and Ronaldo Could Become First Six-Time Participants

Both players have appeared in every World Cup since Germany 2006. Their participation this year would make them the first footballers ever to feature in six World Cup tournaments.

5. Messi Could Break the Assists Record

Messi has accumulated eight World Cup assists and could challenge the all-time record held by either Pelé or Germany’s Fritz Walter, depending on the methodology used.

6. Messi Could Extend Minutes Played Record

The Argentine captain already owns the record for most World Cup minutes played at 2,314. Every additional appearance will extend that mark.

7. Messi Could Extend Captaincy Record

Messi has captained Argentina in 19 World Cup matches, more than any player in history.

8. Mbappé Could Become First Player to Score in Three World Cup Finals

After scoring in both the 2018 and 2022 finals, Mbappé could become the first footballer ever to score in three separate World Cup finals, and three consecutive finals.

NATIONS CHASING HISTORY

9. Argentina Could Win Back-to-Back World Cups

The reigning champions could become only the third nation in history to retain the World Cup trophy. Only Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) have previously achieved the feat.

10. Brazil Could Extend Its Record Sixth Title

Brazil remains the most successful nation in World Cup history with five titles. Victory in 2026 would give the Seleção an unprecedented sixth crown.

11. England Could End a 60-Year Wait

If England lift the trophy, they would break Italy’s record for the longest gap between successive World Cup titles. The Three Lions have not won the tournament since 1966.

12. Uruguay Could End a 76-Year Drought

Uruguay’s last World Cup triumph came in 1950. A victory this year would represent the longest gap between titles in tournament history.

13. Germany Could Extend Runner-Up Record

Germany has finished second four times, more than any other nation. Another runners-up finish would extend that record.

14. France Could Reach a Third Consecutive Final

After winning in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2022, France could become only the third nation ever to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals.

15. Brazil Will Extend Appearance Record

The 2026 tournament marks Brazil’s 23rd World Cup appearance, extending their record as the only nation to feature in every edition.

16. Brazil Could Extend Wins Record

Brazil currently holds the record for most World Cup victories with 76 wins. That tally is expected to rise further.

17. Brazil Could Extend Goals Record

The South Americans have scored 237 World Cup goals, more than any other nation.

18. England and Germany Could Rewrite Draw Record

England currently holds the record for most World Cup draws with 22. Germany, with 21, could match or surpass that figure.

19. Germany Could Extend Goals Conceded Record

Germany has conceded 130 goals at World Cups, the highest total in tournament history.

20. Host Nation Could Finally Win Again

For the first time since France won the World Cup on home soil in 1998, a host nation could be crowned champion. With the United States, Canada, and Mexico jointly hosting, there are three opportunities for the host-country drought to end.

A Tournament Built for History

The expanded 48-team format means World Cup 2026 will feature a record 104 matches, giving players and nations more opportunities than ever before to set new milestones.

Whether it is Messi extending his remarkable legacy, Ronaldo achieving another unprecedented feat, Mbappé chasing football immortality, or Argentina attempting to defend their crown, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is shaping up as a tournament where history could be rewritten almost every day.
