FIFA World Cup 2026
Group F Result: Netherlands 2-2 Japan
Dallas, United States: Japan struck late to earn a deserved 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining Group F opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
Daichi Kamada’s 89th-minute equaliser ensured the Blue Samurai came away with a point after twice fighting back against the Dutch in a pulsating second-half contest at Dallas Stadium.
The Netherlands looked destined to claim all three points after Crysencio Summerville restored their lead midway through the second half. However, Japan’s persistence paid off when substitute Koki Ogawa’s header from a corner was deflected in by Kamada to spark celebrations among the Asian side.
The result leaves Group F finely balanced and underlines Japan’s reputation as one of international football’s most resilient teams.
Cagey First Half
The opening period offered few clear-cut opportunities as both teams cautiously settled into the tournament.
The Netherlands enjoyed slightly more possession, with Donyell Malen causing problems down the flanks and Cody Gakpo testing Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Suzuki, however, remained alert to keep the Dutch at bay while Japan gradually grew into the game through Keito Nakamura and Ayase Ueda.
Despite several promising attacks from both sides, the teams went into halftime level at 0-0.
The match burst into life five minutes into the second half.
Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the 50th minute, rising highest to head home after Ryan Gravenberch delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.
The Dutch captain’s goal appeared to put Ronald Koeman’s side in control, but Japan responded with characteristic determination.
Just seven minutes later, Keito Nakamura levelled matters with a superb low strike that beat Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and restored parity.
Japan’s response echoed their memorable comeback victories over Germany and Spain during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they also recovered after conceding first.
The Netherlands regained the lead in the 64th minute when winger Crysencio Summerville produced a moment of quality, cutting inside before curling a perfectly placed effort in off the post for his first World Cup goal.
As the clock ticked towards full time, the Dutch looked set to take an early advantage in the race for qualification.
But Japan refused to surrender. In the 89th minute, substitute Koki Ogawa rose to meet a corner kick and his header glanced off Daichi Kamada before finding its way past Verbruggen and into the net.
The late equaliser rewarded Japan’s relentless attacking effort and denied the Netherlands what would have been a valuable opening victory.
Group F Wide Open
The draw means both teams begin their World Cup campaigns with a point and leaves Group F delicately poised ahead of the next round of fixtures.
While the Netherlands will feel disappointed to have surrendered the lead twice, Japan will be encouraged by their resilience and ability to compete with one of Europe’s traditional football powers.
The Blue Samurai once again demonstrated why they are regarded as one of the most dangerous and disciplined teams outside football’s traditional elite.
For Koeman’s Netherlands, defensive lapses late in the match proved costly as victory slipped away in the closing moments.
