Rubirizi, Uganda: Residents of Kikuba Village in Ndekye Ward, Rubirizi, are celebrating improved access to safe and clean water following the completion of a new community water project funded by Bunyaruguru County Member of Parliament, Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo.

The project, valued at more than Shs6 million, is expected to improve access to safe water for hundreds of residents who have for years struggled with water shortages and long journeys to unsafe water sources.

Community members led by Tumwesigye Mangara and Kasande Merab described the intervention as life-changing, noting that families previously depended on water from Lake Kigezi and other distant sources, exposing them to waterborne diseases and forcing women and children to spend hours searching for water.

“Hon. Cadet has given us life,” one resident said, expressing gratitude for the project.

Residents said the new water source will significantly reduce the burden on women and children while improving household hygiene, sanitation and overall public health.

Local leaders welcomed the development, describing access to clean water as a critical pillar for community development and improved livelihoods.

Hon. Tugume Muzafaru said the project will contribute to better health outcomes, improve sanitation standards and support small-scale agricultural activities within the area.

He urged residents to protect and maintain the facility to ensure it serves future generations.

“Clean water is essential for healthy communities. We must safeguard this project and ensure it continues benefiting our people,” he said.

Speaking during the commissioning, Hon. Cadet Buturo reaffirmed his commitment to addressing water scarcity challenges across Bunyaruguru and pledged to continue supporting community-driven development initiatives.

The legislator noted that access to clean water remains one of the key priorities raised by residents and said efforts are underway to expand similar projects to other underserved areas within the constituency.

“This is part of our broader commitment to improving the welfare of our people. Access to clean water is not a luxury, it is a necessity that directly impacts health, education and economic productivity,” Buturo said.

Residents and local leaders commended the MP for supporting community development initiatives and expressed optimism that the project would help improve living standards in the area.

The new water project adds to ongoing efforts aimed at expanding access to essential services in Rubirizi and improving the quality of life for rural communities.
