Ssemujju flees Uganda amid Muhoozi crackdown on opposition figures

The development comes days after Gen Muhoozi suggested that Ssemujju and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi could be the next opposition figures to face action following Lukwago’s arrest.

Kampala, Uganda: Former Kira Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has revealed that he is in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, amid growing political tensions following recent remarks by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba targeting opposition leaders.

Ssemujju disclosed his travel in a post on X while commenting on the court appearance of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

“I want to welcome back my brother @EriasLukwago from @mkainerugaba captivity. I missed his court appearance yesterday because I was travelling to Mecca. Allah will intervene in these matters like He has done before,” Ssemujju wrote.

He added: “Late Hajji Aziizi Kasujja was detained by Idi Amin in Mbuya military barracks. Kasujja’s friends in the military told him he was safer in prison. Can you imagine we are happy that Lukwago is in Luzira and not with Muhoozi!”

His comments came days after Gen Muhoozi suggested that Ssemujju and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi could be the next opposition figures to face action following Lukwago’s arrest.

In a June 18 post on X, Muhoozi wrote: “Semujju and Joel will follow very soon.”

The remarks followed the arrest and prosecution of Lukwago, who was charged with misprision of treason before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on June 17.

The veteran opposition politician denied the charge and was remanded to Luzira Prison until June 23.

Muhoozi’s comments have since generated widespread discussion online, with some social media users linking Ssemujju’s travel to the threats made against him.

Others questioned the timing of the trip, arguing that he should have remained in Uganda during Lukwago’s legal battle.

However, supporters of the former MP pointed out that international travel, particularly religious pilgrimages, is often planned months in advance and may not be connected to unfolding political developments.

Ssemujju, a senior member of the People’s Front for Freedom and former parliamentary commissioner, has been one of the most outspoken critics of the government and security agencies in recent years.

His latest remarks also reflect growing concerns among opposition supporters over the arrest of political figures and the increasingly heated exchanges between opposition leaders and members of the security establishment.

Neither Ssemujju nor his political associates have indicated when he is expected to return to Uganda.
