Mbale, Uganda: The Umukuka of Bugisu, His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, has pledged to engage the Ministry of Education and Sports and other government authorities to support Bufumbo Senior Secondary School, which is grappling with significant infrastructure challenges amid a growing student population.

The commitment was revealed by the spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Steven Masiga, who is currently conducting school outreach visits across the Bugisu sub-region on behalf of the cultural leader.

Masiga said the Umukuka is concerned about the state of educational facilities in the region and is prepared to lobby relevant government agencies to ensure that Bufumbo Secondary School receives the support needed to improve learning conditions.

“His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma will contact the highest levels of government to ensure that the school has sufficient educational infrastructure to support the swelling number of students,” Masiga said.

He noted that while the institution’s mandate is primarily cultural, it cannot ignore challenges affecting education and the future of the Bamasaba community.

“As a cultural institution, we feel comfortable when our people are learning, and we shall lobby for extra classrooms, including putting them on the government payroll,” he added.

Masiga explained that his ongoing school tour is aimed at delivering the Umukuka’s message to learners and school communities, particularly on issues that hinder education and personal development.

The campaign focuses on combating drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriages, gender-based challenges and other factors that negatively affect learners.

“The purpose of these school visits is to promote the Umukuka’s message on morality, discipline and education. We want learners to stay focused on their studies and avoid practices that undermine their future,” Masiga said.

He described Bufumbo Senior Secondary School, located in Mbale District, as one of the institutions facing pressing infrastructural needs despite serving a growing student population.

“Whereas my tasks are cultural, I cannot gloss over educational challenges affecting schools in Bugisu. Education remains critical to the development of our people,” he noted.

The Bugisu Cultural Institution has in recent months intensified engagement with schools across the region as part of broader efforts to promote cultural values, education, morality and social transformation among young people.

The outreach programme is also being used to mobilise communities ahead of the upcoming Imbalu cultural activities and to strengthen the institution’s engagement with Bamasaba youth both in Uganda and neighbouring Kenya.
