Kalangala, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to address key infrastructure and service delivery challenges in Kalangala District, including the addition of two new ferries, electricity expansion, and improvements in healthcare and education, as he rallied support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate ahead of the Woman MP by-election.

The President, who also serves as the NRM National Chairman, made the commitments during a campaign rally in Kalangala on Monday in support of the party’s flag bearer, Idah Nabayiga.

Mr Museveni urged voters to elect Nabayiga, saying her victory would strengthen coordination between the district and the central government and accelerate the implementation of development programmes.

“Today, I campaigned in Kalangala in support of the NRM Woman MP candidate, Idah Nabayiga, and urged the people to vote for her so we can strengthen coordination and accelerate service delivery,” Museveni said in a post on X.

The President assured residents that government would deploy additional ferries on the Nakiwogo–Lutoboka and Bukakata–Kalangala routes to improve transport connectivity between the islands and the mainland.

He also pledged to extend electricity coverage across more parts of the district, improve health and education services, and continue supporting household income initiatives.

“I assured them that Government will add two ferries on the Nakiwogo–Lutoboka and Bukakata–Kalangala routes, extend electricity, improve health and education services, and continue supporting wealth creation through palm oil, the Four-Acre Model, and sustainable fishing,” Museveni added.

Kalangala District remains one of Uganda’s key palm oil-growing areas under the government’s wealth creation programme. The President emphasized that continued investment in commercial agriculture, fisheries, and rural infrastructure remains central to improving livelihoods in the island district.

The June 24 by-election was triggered by the death of former Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli of the National Unity Platform (NUP). The race has attracted several candidates, with both NRM and opposition parties viewing the contest as politically significant.

Museveni’s visit marked the final phase of the ruling party’s campaign as voters prepare to head to the polls on Wednesday.
