Kampala, Uganda: DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) analysis conducted by Uganda Police and the Government Analytical Laboratory has confirmed that only four of the 25 individuals who claimed to be children of the late Kadongo Kamu music legend Prince Paul Job Kafeero are his biological offspring.
The results, released on Thursday by the Police Forensic Directorate at Police Headquarters in Naguru, bring to a close a long-running paternity dispute that has persisted for years following Kafeero’s death in 2007.
According to the forensic findings, the four individuals confirmed as Kafeero’s biological children are Benedicto Kafeero, Simon Peter Kafeero, Thomas Kafeero and Elizabeth Nagawa.
The results were presented by the Director of Forensics at Uganda Police, Andrew Mubiru, whose laboratory findings matched those independently generated by the Government Analytical Laboratory in Wandegeya.
The scientific analysis involved comparing DNA samples obtained from the 25 claimants against samples extracted from Kafeero’s remains following a court-sanctioned exhumation conducted two weeks ago.
The exercise was carried out under strict forensic procedures by a team of pathologists led by Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr Moses Byaruhanga, with oversight from the Uganda Police Force.
The paternity verification process was spearheaded by Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development (Children and Youth Affairs), Balaam Barugahara, a longtime friend and associate of the late musician.
Barugahara described the findings as a major breakthrough in resolving a dispute that has remained contentious for more than two decades.
“The exercise marks a significant step towards establishing the truth in a matter that has remained unresolved for many years,” Barugahara said.
He noted that disagreements over Kafeero’s biological children had created uncertainty and tension among family members and other interested parties, making scientific verification necessary.
“The findings will bring clarity, justice and harmony to those involved,” he added.
Barugahara also thanked the judiciary, members of Kafeero’s family, Dr Byaruhanga and his forensic team, the Uganda Police Force and all stakeholders who participated in the exercise.
Legacy of a Kadongo Kamu Icon
Paul Job Kafeero remains one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers and greatest exponents of Kadongo Kamu music.
Throughout his career, Kafeero produced numerous hit songs that resonated across generations and earned him a lasting place in Uganda’s music history.
His music often addressed social issues, family life, morality and everyday struggles, making him one of the country’s most influential cultural figures.
Even after his death in 2007, Kafeero’s legacy has continued to inspire musicians and attract a loyal fan base.
The DNA findings are expected to have implications for family matters relating to inheritance, recognition and representation of the late singer’s estate.
With the forensic results now officially released and verified by both government laboratories, a chapter that has generated speculation and controversy for years appears to have finally been settled through scientific evidence.
