2026 FIFA World Cup – Group E Results
Ivory Coast 2-0 Curaçao
Ecuador 2-1 Germany
Philadelphia, United States: Ecuador produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage after coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 32, while Ivory Coast also advanced after a historic 2-0 victory over Curaçao.
The dramatic final round of Group E fixtures saw Germany finish top despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament, with Ivory Coast and Ecuador also progressing from the group.
Ecuador Complete Stunning Comeback
Ecuador entered the match against Germany needing a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive and responded with a spirited performance against the four-time world champions.
Germany made the perfect start when Leroy Sané found the breakthrough after just two minutes, appearing to put Julian Nagelsmann’s side on course for a third consecutive victory.
However, Ecuador refused to be intimidated and responded almost immediately.
Nilson Angulo equalised seven minutes later, scoring Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament and injecting belief into the South American side.
The match remained evenly balanced for much of the contest as Germany dominated possession while Ecuador threatened on the counterattack.
With qualification hanging in the balance, Ecuador found the decisive moment in the 77th minute.
Kevin Rodríguez flicked on a corner delivery and Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the penalty area, stretching to poke the ball beyond veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and complete a memorable comeback.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among Ecuadorian players and supporters as the victory secured progression to the knockout rounds.
It marks only the second time Ecuador have reached the World Cup knockout stage, having previously achieved the feat in 2002.
Despite the defeat, Germany had already guaranteed qualification after victories in their opening two matches and remain group winners with six points.
Ivory Coast Make History
In Philadelphia, Ivory Coast secured their place in the knockout rounds for the first time in their history after defeating Curaçao 2-0.
Former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pépé delivered a match-winning performance, scoring once in each half to guide the Elephants into the Round of 32.
The Ivorians only required a draw to progress but quickly asserted their dominance.
Pépé opened the scoring in the seventh minute after Yan Diomande won possession near the byline and delivered a perfect pass for a simple finish.
Ivory Coast continued to create chances and came close to extending their lead through Amad Diallo before halftime.
Curaçao, needing victory to stand any chance of qualification, improved after the break and pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Jurien Gaari and Sherel Floranus both threatened, but goalkeeper Yahia Fofana remained largely untested.
Pépé eventually ended any hopes of a comeback when he latched onto a precise through ball from Ibrahim Sangare before calmly finishing to secure all three points.
The result ensured Ivory Coast finished second in Group E and booked a place in the knockout stage.
Although Curaçao exit the tournament, the Caribbean nation leaves with pride after an impressive debut World Cup campaign that included a historic first goal and first point at football’s biggest tournament.
Group E Final Standings
Germany finished top of Group E with six points despite their defeat to Ecuador.
Ivory Coast also ended on six points but finished second due to goal difference.
Ecuador’s victory lifted them to four points and secured the third qualification spot, while Curaçao finished bottom with one point.

Knockout Stage Awaits
Ivory Coast will now face either France or Norway in the Round of 32 on June 30.
Germany advance as group winners and are expected to meet one of Paraguay, Australia or Sweden depending on the outcome of the remaining group-stage fixtures.
Ecuador’s reward for their famous victory will also be a place among the final 32 teams as they continue their quest for a historic World Cup run.
The results underline the unpredictable nature of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, where several traditional powers have already faced stiff resistance from emerging football nations determined to make their mark on the global stage.
