Bugisu Cultural Institution opens internship opportunities for university students

Institution spokesperson Steven Masiga said the cultural institution is opening its doors to students seeking to complement classroom learning with hands-on professional exposure in various departments.

Mbale City, Uganda: The Bugisu Cultural Institution has invited university students pursuing public administration, tourism, protocol, security and other related disciplines to undertake internship placements at its offices as part of efforts to provide practical experience in cultural governance and public administration.

Institution spokesperson Steven Masiga said the cultural institution is opening its doors to students seeking to complement classroom learning with hands-on professional exposure in various departments.

“As a cultural institution, and indeed a public cultural institution, it is our duty to support university students pursuing courses related to protocol, administration, tourism, security, and other areas by offering them opportunities to acquire practical skills,” Masiga said.

He noted that interns will be exposed to day-to-day operations of the institution, including protocol management, public administration, event coordination, and cultural heritage promotion.

According to Masiga, students pursuing public administration will gain practical knowledge in official protocol and administrative procedures through interactions with dignitaries and high-profile visitors who regularly visit the institution.

“Students pursuing public administration can acquire practical protocol skills because the cultural institution routinely receives notable personalities. During the forthcoming Imbalu season, we expect to host very important guests, including national leaders,” he said.

Masiga added that students studying tourism and hospitality management will also benefit from participating in the organisation of cultural events associated with the 2026 Imbalu circumcision ceremony.

He said the institution expects to receive traditional and cultural leaders from different parts of Uganda and Africa, as well as other invited dignitaries, providing interns with valuable exposure in visitor management and cultural tourism.

“Those pursuing tourism-related courses can utilise this opportunity by supporting the institution in areas such as protocol, hospitality and coordination of visiting delegations during Imbalu,” Masiga explained.

He described the internship programme as an opportunity for young professionals to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical work experience while gaining a deeper understanding of Uganda’s cultural institutions.

The Bugisu Cultural Institution, headed by His Highness Umukuka Jude Mike Mudoma III, is currently preparing for the 2026 Imbalu circumcision season, one of the country’s largest cultural events, which attracts thousands of participants, tourists, government officials, and cultural leaders from within Uganda and abroad.
