Kamuli, Uganda: Police in Kamuli District have arrested a Local Council One (LC1) chairperson and another suspect after recovering three cows believed to have been stolen during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of Friday.

The suspects were identified as Lubandi Mathias, 37, the LC1 Chairperson of Kabukye Village, Busota Ward in Southern Division, Kamuli Municipality, and Buwemba Joshua, 32, a resident of the same village.

According to the Busoga North Policing Region, officers led by the Kamuli District Police Commander intercepted the suspects at about 3:30 a.m. in Busikina Village, Butansi Sub-county while they were in possession of three cattle suspected to have been stolen.

Police also impounded an Isuzu Tipper, registration number UBM 457M, which investigators believe was being used to transport the animals.

A few hours later, at around 7:00 a.m., two livestock farmers separately reported cases of cattle theft at Kitayunjwa Sub-county Police Station.

The complainants were identified as Lubale Fazil, 27, and Ngobi Swabaha, 35, both residents of Nakimegere Village in Kitayunjwa Parish, Kitayunjwa Sub-county.

Preliminary police investigations established that the three cattle recovered during the dawn operation belonged to the two complainants, linking the suspects to the reported thefts. “The suspects are currently in police custody pending further investigations,” police said in a statement.

Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson SP Michael Kasadha commended members of the public for promptly reporting suspected criminal activity, saying timely information remains critical in combating livestock theft across the region.

He urged livestock farmers to remain vigilant, strengthen security around their animals and continue working closely with law enforcement agencies to curb cattle theft and related crimes.

Cattle theft remains one of the persistent crimes affecting rural communities in Busoga and other parts of Uganda, often depriving families of their primary source of income and livelihoods. Police have in recent months intensified intelligence-led operations targeting livestock theft syndicates operating across the sub-region.
