Uganda reaffirms strong ties with Madagascar at 66th Independence Anniversary

Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo represented President Yoweri Museveni during Madagascar's 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Antananarivo on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Antananarivo, Madagascar: Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Affairs) and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, on Friday represented President Museveni at celebrations marking the 66th Anniversary of the Republic of Madagascar’s Return to Independence, reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and regional cooperation with the Indian Ocean nation.

The celebrations, held at Barea Stadium in the Madagascan capital of Antananarivo, brought together government officials, diplomats, and international guests to commemorate Madagascar’s independence from French colonial rule on June 26, 1960.

Hon Kasolo attended the national celebrations on behalf of President Museveni, who recently appointed him Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs following the appointment of Ambassador Adonia Ayebare as substantive minister, pending his assumption of office.

In a statement after the event, Kasolo said Uganda values its longstanding friendship with Madagascar and remains committed to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

“Today, I had the honour of representing H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the celebration marking the 66th Anniversary of the Republic of Madagascar’s Return to Independence, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar.”

The Acting Foreign Affairs Minister noted that the occasion highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Uganda and Madagascar while reinforcing Africa’s shared aspirations for peace, unity and sustainable development.

“The occasion reaffirmed the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Uganda and Madagascar, while underscoring our shared commitment to regional integration, peace and sustainable development across Africa.”

Kasolo also conveyed President Museveni’s congratulations to the people and government of Madagascar on their national day.

“I extend warm congratulations to the Government and the people of Madagascar on this significant national milestone and wish them continued peace, unity, and prosperity.”

Madagascar celebrates Independence Day every June 26 to commemorate the country’s liberation from French colonial administration in 1960 after more than six decades under colonial rule. The day is marked by military parades, cultural performances, fireworks displays, and official state ceremonies across the island nation.

Uganda and Madagascar maintain cordial diplomatic relations through the African Union, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and other continental cooperation frameworks. Both countries continue to advocate for greater intra-African trade, regional peace, climate resilience, and sustainable economic development under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
