Monterrey, Mexico: Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivered another unforgettable World Cup performance as Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw following extra time to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bounou produced crucial saves during a nerve-racking shootout before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the decisive penalty, sending the Atlas Lions into the next round and keeping alive Africa’s impressive campaign at the expanded 48-team tournament.
The victory also ensured Morocco became the second African nation to secure a place in the Round of 16 after Canada eliminated South Africa, with several other African sides yet to play.
Morocco, now coached by Mohamed Ouahbi, controlled large portions of the contest from the opening whistle and looked the more adventurous side throughout normal time.
Captain Achraf Hakimi nearly gave the Atlas Lions an early breakthrough when his powerful strike narrowly missed the target, while Bilal El Khannouss, Brahim Díaz and Ayyoub Bouaddi repeatedly stretched the Dutch defence with quick passing and intelligent movement.
Despite Morocco’s dominance, Ronald Koeman’s side remained disciplined and absorbed wave after wave of pressure, frustrating the North Africans with resolute defending.
The Atlas Lions wasted their clearest opportunity shortly after halftime when Bouaddi found himself unmarked inside the penalty area but dragged his effort wide.
The missed chance proved costly moments later.
Against the run of play, the Netherlands struck in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who finished off a swift counterattack with a composed strike beyond Bounou after Morocco briefly lost possession in midfield.
The goal stunned Morocco but failed to break their spirit.
Ouahbi responded by introducing fresh attacking options as Morocco pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser.
The Atlas Lions continued to dominate possession during the closing stages, forcing the Dutch deep inside their own half as Verbruggen was called into action on several occasions.
Their persistence was finally rewarded deep into extra time.
Substitute Chemsdine Talbi floated an inviting cross into the penalty area where defender Issa Diop rose above the Dutch defence to power a header into the net, sparking jubilant celebrations among Moroccan supporters and forcing the tie into penalties.
The shootout quickly became a contest of goalkeepers and composure.
Both sides struggled from the spot, with the Netherlands missing three penalties in one of the lowest-scoring shootouts of the tournament.
Bounou once again proved why he is regarded as one of world football’s finest penalty specialists, producing a decisive save that swung momentum firmly in Morocco’s favour.
After Morocco converted three penalties, midfielder Ismael Saibari stepped up and confidently buried the winning kick to complete a 3-2 shootout victory, sending the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16.
The result further cements Morocco’s growing reputation as one of international football’s emerging heavyweights following their historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Under Ouahbi, the North Africans have continued to blend experienced stars such as Hakimi, Bounou and Brahim Díaz with an exciting new generation, making them one of Africa’s strongest contenders in the tournament.
Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 after the Canadians edged South Africa 1-0 to reach the knockout stage.
For the Netherlands, the defeat marks another painful World Cup exit despite an impressive group-stage campaign. Ronald Koeman’s men entered the knockout phase with a perfect record after topping Group F, but they were ultimately undone by Morocco’s resilience and Bounou’s heroics from the penalty spot.
