Iganga launches rehabilitation of 9.1km roads in Nawandala Sub-county

RDC Ssewandigi appealed to the public to embrace the project and safeguard government resources, noting that the roads would be upgraded to the standards of the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Iganga District leaders tour one of the roads in Nawandala Sub-county during the project launch.

Iganga, Uganda: Iganga District leaders on Friday launched the rehabilitation of 9.1 kilometres of murram roads in Nawandala Sub-county, a project expected to improve transport, ease access to social services and boost trade in the area.

The road works, being undertaken by Linear Engineering Services, cover three road sections: Nawandala–Bugole A–Bugole B (5.7km), Namabwere–Nabukalu (1.8km), and Namabwere–Nawangaiza (1.6km).

According to district officials, the project will be implemented over six months, followed by a three-month defects liability period during which the contractor will rectify any defects identified after completion.

The launch was officiated by Iganga District LCV Chairperson Swabiru Isabirye Kalulu, Resident District Commissioner Eric Ssewandigi, District Engineer Wilberforce Mbatya, and Principal Secretary in the Chief Administrative Officer’s office Iddi Bategenya.

Speaking at the launch, Isabirye urged residents to cooperate with the contractor and district authorities to ensure the successful completion of the project.

“I urge people in Nawandala Sub-county to work with the road rehabilitation team by allowing the expansion of the road, though it will affect some people. Please be vigilant and report any matters regarding the road maintenance to my office and the office of the RDC,” Isabirye said.

He also cautioned residents that there would be no compensation for property affected by the planned seven-metre road expansion.

RDC Ssewandigi appealed to the public to embrace the project and safeguard government resources, noting that the roads would be upgraded to the standards of the Ministry of Works and Transport.

“The roads will be worked on to Ministry of Works standards and will reconnect areas that have been cut off along some routes. We urge people to embrace this project and report those stealing fuel as well as any shoddy work,” Ssewandigi said.

District Engineer Mbatya called on residents to stop encroaching on road reserves and urged the contractor to maintain quality standards throughout the implementation period.

He also encouraged senior company officials to regularly supervise the works instead of leaving projects in the hands of junior personnel after the launch.

“We expect senior contractors to remain on the ground and closely monitor the works instead of returning to Kampala immediately after launching the project,” Mbatya said.

The Managing Director of Linear Engineering Services, Eng. Livingston Sseruyange, assured residents that the company would deliver quality work within the agreed timelines.

He added that the contractor would prioritise employing unskilled and semi-skilled workers from Nawandala Sub-county.

“Send us people to work with, and we shall employ unskilled and semi-skilled workers, but only those committed to work will be considered,” Eng. Sseruyange said.

District officials said the improved road network is expected to enhance access to markets, schools and health facilities while supporting economic activities across Nawandala Sub-county.
