Amsterdam, Netherlands: Uganda’s diplomatic missions across Europe have reaffirmed the government’s commitment to engaging the diaspora as a key partner in national development after participating in the Euro Cranes Tournament 2026 held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The annual tournament attracted hundreds of Ugandans living across Europe, bringing together diaspora football teams in a celebration of unity, patriotism and sportsmanship while strengthening ties among Ugandans living abroad.

The event was attended by Uganda’s Ambassadors and High Commissioner accredited to Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and the United Kingdom, underscoring the growing role of the diaspora in advancing Uganda’s interests in investment, trade, tourism, cultural diplomacy and people-to-people cooperation.

Speaking during the tournament, Uganda’s Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP) and World Health Organization (WHO), H.E. Elizabeth Paula Napeyok, described the competition as more than a sporting event.

She said the tournament provides an important platform for strengthening friendship among Ugandans abroad, nurturing talent and reinforcing national identity.

Ambassador Napeyok encouraged participants to uphold discipline, teamwork, integrity and fair play, reminding them that they remain ambassadors of Uganda wherever they live.

She noted that sporting events such as the Euro Cranes Tournament help deepen engagement between the government and the Ugandan diaspora while promoting national unity beyond the country’s borders.

The tournament concluded with the United States team emerging champions of the 2026 edition after an impressive campaign.

Organisers also announced that Germany will host the 2027 Euro Cranes Tournament, continuing the event’s tradition of bringing together Ugandan communities across Europe through sport, networking and patriotism.

The annual competition has increasingly become an important platform for fostering closer collaboration between Uganda’s diplomatic missions and the diaspora while showcasing the role of sports in strengthening national identity and community cohesion.
