Kamuli, Uganda: The Ministry of Health has strengthened healthcare delivery in Kamuli District with the donation of five motorcycles worth Shs100 million, aimed at improving immunisation outreach and other essential health services, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.
The motorcycles, donated through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, were officially handed over to the district’s health department during a ceremony held on Sunday at Kamuli District headquarters.
The motorcycles have been allocated to health facilities in Bulopa, Kagumba, Nankandulo, Namwendwa, and Butansi to facilitate community outreach and improve access to critical health services.
Speaking during the handover, Assistant District Health Officer Dr. Lyagoba Moses urged health workers to safeguard the motorcycles and ensure they are used strictly for their intended purpose. “I urge you to use these motorcycles with care and for the intended purpose. They are meant to help us reach communities and improve immunisation services.”
Dr. Lyagoba noted that the motorcycles would enhance integrated community health interventions, including health education, home visits, immunisation campaigns and disease prevention activities.
“The motorcycles will help the health department deliver integrated services such as health education, home visits, immunisation services and other public health activities aimed at improving community health standards,” he added.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Buzaya Constituency, John Batambuze, commended the Government of Uganda and the Ministry of Health for strengthening frontline health services through improved transport.
“The government is committed to improving health services. We thank it for providing these motorcycles that will help our health workers reach the people,” Batambuze said.
Health workers who received the motorcycles welcomed the support, describing inadequate transport as one of the biggest obstacles to delivering timely health services in remote communities.
One of the beneficiaries, Duula, said the motorcycles would significantly improve the efficiency of outreach programmes.
“We have been facing transport challenges in the field. These motorcycles will help us move faster to deliver immunisation and other health services,” Duula said.
District leaders expressed optimism that the new motorcycles will strengthen routine immunisation programmes, improve supervision of health activities, and enhance access to healthcare services, especially for vulnerable populations living in hard-to-reach areas.
The donation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health and its development partners to strengthen Uganda’s primary healthcare system by improving mobility for frontline health workers and expanding the reach of life-saving immunisation services.
