Kampala, Uganda: The Minister for Works and Transport, Hon Fred Byamukama, has given the contractor undertaking maintenance works on Kampala’s Northern Bypass until next Monday, July 13, to complete the project and restore smooth traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
The directive was issued on Monday during the minister’s inspection of ongoing maintenance works on the Namungoona–Bwaise section of the bypass, where motorists have endured weeks of heavy traffic congestion.
Byamukama expressed concern over the prolonged delays, saying the congestion has disrupted businesses, delayed commuters and inconvenienced thousands of road users who rely on the route daily.
“I’m giving the contractor up to Monday next week to complete the ongoing maintenance works on the Northern Bypass,” Byamukama said.
The minister directed the contractor to deploy additional equipment, personnel and other resources to fast-track the remaining works and ensure the road section is reopened within the agreed timeline.
He acknowledged the frustrations experienced by motorists and emphasized that the government expects the contractor to deliver the project without any further delays.
“The prolonged traffic congestion along this critical corridor has caused significant inconvenience to motorists,” Byamukama said, urging the contractor to expedite the remaining works.
The Northern Bypass is one of Kampala’s most strategic road corridors, linking Busega, Namungoona, Bwaise, Kisaasi, Ntinda, Kyambogo, and Bweyogerere, while serving as a key transit route for traffic connecting western, northern, and eastern Uganda.
Road maintenance works on sections of the bypass have recently resulted in lengthy traffic jams, prompting complaints from commuters, transport operators and businesses over increased travel times.
Government says the ongoing maintenance is intended to improve road safety, preserve the carriageway and enhance the efficiency of traffic movement along the corridor.
